Major Upset ?
By Craig Spivey
Over the past three years, Major Applewhite has proven to be the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns. Last week, against New Mexico, he proved that he is also the fan favorite. Major received a standing ovation during his brief outing Saturday and a solid 4 for 5 on pass attempts. Major is a smart quarterback. He has earned a starting position and is the leader of this team.
Would it be horrible for Texas to bench Simms and replace him with Major for the 2001 season? Would Simms transfer to another school during the year? I don't understand why Applewhite's not playing. Is it because we're scared Simms would transfer? Has anyone heard of Chance Mock? Mock's ready to go for the next three years of his college career. Chance is another highly recruited high school quarterback that red shirted last year and will start seeing some playing time during the 2002 season.
Mac has a difficult decision to make. Or does he? He has said that his starting quarterback this year is Simms. Is Simms quarterback because he is the best man for the job or is there pressure from alumni to start him? Are they worried he'd transfer to another team? I don't think so. It's a little too late for that.
Major is a leader and also Big 12 Player of the Year for 2 years. Major should be starting quarterback for the 2001 season. It hurts me to see him on the sidelines after he pulled us through three exciting seasons. Applewhite's cool. He takes control of the game.
Texas will win with Simms. He's potentially a great quarterback. Will they win the National Championship? We'll find out October 6th during the Red River Shootout.
