Today, I was turned down for a public relations internship I had applied for. I really wanted to get this job and so I worked really hard to polish my resume and refine my interview skills. The employer declined to hire me on as an intern because I lacked experience in public relations. Now, I will admit that I don't have much experience in public relations. But, I do have excellent writing and organizational skills, and many other useful qualities to offer an employer. But, I don't have "experience." Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the whole point of an internship to gain experience?
I am finding myself caught between a rock and a hard place. I am trying to do well in school to get a good job, but I apparently don't have the necessary experience to get a good job or even an internship. I have been turned down for several internships because of this "experience issue."
I am not going to sweat it...I am just going to hang in there and keep doing what I do and hopefully some employer will decide to go out on a limb and hire me. I refuse to work a menial part-time job over the summer. I do not think that is too much to ask for. I am an intelligent, motivated, and flexible. Plus, I graduate in one year.
If any of you reading this right now have had trouble getting a job or an internship, don't worry. There are many people out there just like you. These employers will have to come around sooner or later. Hopefully, not later.
